Working in this job abroad: visa notes

In the UK, graphic designers may not be classed as higher skilled; check the occupation code.

United Kingdom

Graduate-level roles are often ‘higher skilled’ and may qualify for the Skilled Worker visa with a licensed sponsor, provided the salary meets the general threshold (£41,700 at the time of writing) or the occupation’s going rate, whichever is higher. Exceptional talent can use the Global Talent visa.

United States

Common routes are the H-1B (degree-level ‘specialty occupation’, subject to an annual lottery), L-1 intracompany transfers, O-1 for extraordinary ability, and TN status for Canadian and Mexican citizens in listed USMCA professions. Permanent residence is usually employer-sponsored (EB-2/EB-3).

Canada

Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker or Canadian Experience Class) is the main permanent route; employer-specific work permits may need an LMIA, while some tech roles can use the Global Talent Stream. Provincial nominee programs target in-demand occupations.

Australia

You may need a skills assessment from the relevant body (e.g. ACS for ICT, Engineers Australia, CPA Australia/CA ANZ/IPA for accountants, VETASSESS for many others) and an occupation on the relevant skilled list. Routes include the Skills in Demand (482) visa and points-tested 189/190 visas.

United Arab Emirates

Work is normally through an employer-sponsored work permit and residence visa processed via MOHRE. Degree attestation is commonly required. Highly skilled professionals meeting salary and qualification criteria may be eligible for a 10-year Golden Visa.

Degree-level jobs may qualify for the EU Blue Card (a recognised degree or, in some countries, equivalent experience, plus a salary threshold set by each country) or national skilled-worker permits. Rules differ between member states, so check the EU Immigration Portal for the specific country.
